Showcasing our School:
Please invite your State Representative and State Senator to visit the Open High School of Utah booth at Charter School Day at the Capitol on February 18th from 12:00-2:00.

Find your legislators, and then send a personal invitation as a follow-up to the general invitation that the school sent to each Utah Legislator on January 21st. You could also include a personal anecdote, why you appreciate having options in education, why you chose OHSU or what your student has gained as a result of being enrolled in OHSU.

Helpful Hint: Always include your name, address and contact information in your communications with legislators. They receive hundreds of e-mails a day and your contact info allows them to easily determine which ones are from constituents and which ones are not.

The Open High School of Utah is a public charter school funded by taxpayer dollars which are appropriated by the Utah Legislature.

Fitness for Life (.5)
Computer Literacy (.5)
Current Issues (.5)

Each student should be signed up for a minimum of SIX credits to be on track for graduation. In addition to equipping our students with amazing tech skills and a sound education, we aim to instill a love for lifelong service in our students as well. Carol Foster, the Parent Org Secretary, will be tracking the hours, so e-mail them to her at CarolPO@openhighschool.org as you do them.

We welcomed a handful of new students at OHSU yesterday at our new student Orientation. It was a successful experience, due in large part to our peer mentors who Skyped in to show the new students the ropes. Our Peer Mentor Program will be expanded next year to include all incoming students. Any returning students who are interested in being a Peer Mentor can contact the Director at delaina.tonks@openhighschool.org for more information.

Students and Parents:

It is time for you to register for your 2nd Semester classes at Open High School of Utah. Second Semester will begin on January 14, 2010. The registration form needs to be completed and submitted by Friday, December 11, 2009. The registration link has been sent to your student at their Open HS e-mail address so that we can easily track who has and hasn’t registered. Please work together to register by the deadline.

Please read the following information carefully.

We are excited to announce that we will be offering two elective courses in BrainHoney next semester. This means that the majority of students will be able to take all 6 courses through OHSU, and will not need to take any classes through BYU Independent Study. There are, however, a few special circumstances in which students can still take those BYU IS classes.

The elective courses that will be offered are Computer Literacy and PE Fitness for Living. Computer Literacy is required for graduation, and so all students need to take this class, unless you completed it through BYU during 1st semester. Students must complete 1.50 PE credits in order to graduate, and the Fitness for Living class will accomplish 0.50 credits toward that requirement. Even if you have already taken a PE class this year, you may still take this class for an additional PE credit.

If you are currently enrolled in the first half of a year-long course at BYU (such as foreign language), you may choose to complete the second half of that series in place of the electives we are offering. OHSU will still pay for your to take that elective course. If you have already taken Computer Literacy or PE and do not wish to repeat, you may also choose BYU electives in their place.

All BYU IS courses can be found online at www.elearn.byu.edu. Please click on Courses, and then High School courses. Please read all of the requirements for the class you are interested in, including any textbooks or materials that may be required. OHSU will pay for $124 towards your class. Any additional tuition costs, fees, textbooks, paper manuals, etc. will be your responsibility.

Please complete the registration form found at the attached link. If you will be taking BYU classes, Mrs. Wurm will register for you to take those classes. You do not need to register yourself for BYU classes this semester. You also still have the option of taking one or two classes at your local school. Remember, that while OHSU allows this option, it is at the discretion of the local school. If you have ANY questions at all, please do not hesitate to call, email, or skype Mrs. Wurm.

Remember the deadline for this form to be submitted is Friday, December 11, 2009.

Many of you may not have had contact with me yet, but I am Jenni Wurm, your student’s School Guidance Counselor. I am sending out an email to all students regarding the BYU Independent Study classes. Some of this information may apply to your student, and some may not. However, please read through it carefully.

*First of all, if any of you have still not registered for your BYU elective classes, please contact me immediately. I will register for you! Remember that you need to be taking 6 classes total in order to be on track for graduation. That includes your classes in BrainHoney, your BYU classes, or any classes you may be taking at your local school. Seminary, or Release Time, does not count towards those 6 classes. If you and I have spoken about this and have made other arrangements, then disregard this portion of the email.

*Second, if any of you have registered for your BYU classes, but have not yet been able to access them, please contact me. I will be able to give you your access codes so that you can begin.

*Third, please remember that the deadline for your BYU classes to be completed is the end of first semester, January 13. You should complete your BYU classes by then in order to begin your new classes for second semester. Please plan accordingly so that you don’t leave it all until the end, and then are scrambling to finish. Do yourself a favor and work on it now so that you aren’t cramming it in over Winter Break!

*Finally, several of you have wondered about how to contact your BYU teachers. Due to the high volume of students, BYU does not give out the email addresses of the teachers. However, you can send an email to indstudy@byu.edu, and they will forward it to your teacher. In the email, you must state your name, the name of the class, your access code for the class, and the name of the teacher. Then you can ask your questions. They will forward it to your teacher, and you should hear back from them.

Please contact me if you have questions or concerns about any of the above, including credits for graduation. I will be going over each student’s transcript during your SEOP (Student Educational Occupational Plan) conference this year. We will then discuss your individual concerns and make sure you are on track to graduate.

I have recently received a couple of reports of cyber-bullying and inappropriate language from certain students during non-class sponsored Skype chats. This is the equivalent of students passing notes to each other in the hallways between classes; the teachers and administration cannot easily police this type of behavior. We can, however, equip parents and students with the necessary tools to keep our students safe.

Parents, please discuss proper netiquette with your student, including but not limited to: no cursing, no harassment or name calling. For more details read the Suspension/Expulsion section from the OHSU Charter, included for your convenience at the bottom of this e-mail.

Please review the following functions with your student and adjust their Skype settings. Feel free to contact me, or a teacher if you need additional assistance.

11.4. Suspension/expulsion

All students at OHSU have the right to feel that they are physically, emotionally, and intellectually safe. Therefore, if at any time a student feels he/she is the subject of harassment, hazing, threats, or other intimidating behavior, he/she should immediately speak to an administrator about the problem. The situation will be investigated immediately. All reports like this will be kept completely confidential.

A student may be suspended at any time for disobedient behavior, fighting, bad language, poor attitude, rebellion, disregard for school rules or property, or similar incidents. No student will be suspended without notice for the reason for which he/she is being suspended and an opportunity to be heard in his/her own behalf before the director/designee. Parents will be informed immediately of all suspensions. The student’s parents are required to contact with the Director and any staff member involved in the suspension prior to the student’s return to school. A suspended student may or may not be required to make up work missed, and will not be allowed to attend any school related function during a period of suspension.

The decision to expel any student will be made in writing and will include the reasons for the expulsion by the Director after hearing about the events involved in a situation. No student shall be expelled without the opportunity for a formal hearing before the Board or before a disciplinary committee duly authorized by the Board. Such hearings shall be closed to the public, but should the parent request, the meeting will be held in public. Students and parents/guardians may appeal an expulsion within two school days of the expulsion being issued. This appeal will be made to the Director and heard by the Board or disciplinary committee. All disciplinary committee hearings on expulsions will be held within five (5) school days of the appeal being made. The decision of this disciplinary committee is final.

Ashley Webb is a recent graduate of Brigham Young University, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Technology and Engineering Education and a multimedia teaching endorsement. She was a student teacher for a variety of classes in Provo and Lindon, including computers, technology, design, and photography. To put herself through school, she worked in tech support. Her belief is that ANYONE can be taught how to use technology, regardless of age or brainpower. Photography is her number-one hobby and she is always saving up for some new photography gadget. She is from California but is now a converted Utahn because she just bought a house in Spanish Fork with her husband and black lab puppy.

The assignments are reasonable, the teacher feedback is specific and timely (ie. wonderful), and I am thrilled with the types of assignments. I see my son learning to articulate his ideas in a more mature manner and I have also been excited about the online discussions. From my perspective, they give normally very quiet kids a chance to participate, which is something that would not happen in a typical classroom. It is great to give him the option of being home with us, me the option of still supervising and having a hand in his education, and also have the option of making him accountable to someone else. Having the sense of accountability to another authority seems to give the learning purpose and makes it interesting and more challenging for him.

Objective: To instill a life-long spirit of service in all of Open High School students, teachers, Board members and parent volunteers.

Goals
School: OHSU will strive to meet the qualifications for the Gold Level Group President’s Volunteer Service Award of 1000 hours. http://www.presidentialserviceawards.gov/tg/pvsainfo/dspAboutAwards.cfm

Students: To complete 25 hours of service per semester via peer mentoring, class projects, and school service opportunities. (If students want to work toward individual awards, they can also count outside service hours for youth groups, community groups, etc.)

Faculty, Administrators, Staff, Parent Organization and Board Members: To set an example for OHSU students by volunteering 25 hours of service each semester through OHSU projects, meetings and activities, or through community organizations.

Process:
Service Learning Coordinator works with faculty to brainstorm, design, and implement at least one service-learning project into their curriculum each semester, keeping in mind the goal of 25 hours per student. SLC also works with Parent Organization to design and implement two school-wide service opportunities; one per semester.

Students, faculty, staff, parents, and Board members perform volunteer service hours, then document by sending the number of hours, date and a brief description to PO in charge of service/PVSA.

A parent volunteer will accept student service hours and track them.

Guidance Counselor will provide support as necessary, especially during SEOPs since the award will set our students apart on college applications.

Director will provide oversight for the plan and work to ensure that all aspects are functioning well, in addition to facilitating communication between all involved.

Anyone who completes 25 hours of service per semester will receive a group PVSA award certificate, pin, letter from the President, local elected officials, school administration etc.

When you log int to demo our curriculum, please notice the following items that will provide you with a clearer picture of what learning is like with the Open High School of Utah.

Student Dashboard
When a student logs in, he or she will see all of the most important information on one screen, making it easy to prioritize learning.

“Due Soon” Display
By clicking on the “Due Soon” display, students get a more detailed list of what assignments are due when. Clicking on the assignment takes them right to it!

Individualized Instruction
The teacher gradebook has a wealth of information, with the most important information – student success – right up front and easy to understand. Our teachers can instantly see who needs help where and provide that help right away.

Responsive Curriculum
The teacher can immediately assess how well learning is happening because of our data-driven instruction. If any part of the curriculum isn’t working well, she can address this topic again with the class, and improve the curriculum not only for this class, but for every class that comes after it.

Service Learning
Our instructional approach is also heavily influenced by “service learning,” meaning that students “learn by doing” as they work in and strengthen their local communities. Service learning incorporates many aspects of project-based learning, which teaches students how what they learn in the classroom applies to every-day life. It also prepares them for the future with experiences in project planning, prioritizing tasks, interpersonal relations, and other areas.

Nothing. It’s free. The Open High School of Utah is a public charter school. As with other public schools, there may be nominal fees charged at the beginning of the year for various things such as the yearbook and tech equipment. The 2010-2011 fee schedule will be posted in April.

How many students will be enrolled in 2010-2011?

We will have a total enrollment of 250 students split between 9th and 10th grades. We will be adding 11th graders in 2011 and 12th graders in 2012. Our first graduating class will be the Class of 2013.

Is the Open High School of Utah Accredited?

Yes. OHSU is accredited through the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools, just like all public high schools in Utah. Open High School accepts credits from all other NAAS accredited schools and vice versa.

What type of teacher teaches at the Open High School of Utah?

Our core teachers are full-time, certified, and licensed. For some of our elective courses, we hire part-time adjunct teachers, all of whom are certified and licensed, or are working toward licensure.

What type of student attends the Open High School of Utah?

Student athletes who travel for competitions, homeschooled students who enjoy learning from home while receiving individualized instruction through Open High School, advanced learners, and more. OHSU is able to provide an exciting learning opportunity for many types of learners.

Can students enroll in one class for credit recovery?

Not at this time. Open High School is a full-service high school and students need to be enrolled for at least four classes for the year.

Where are the school boundaries?

If you are a Utah resident in 9th or 10th grade, you are eligible to attend the Open High School of Utah. You must have a Utah residence to qualify for enrollment.

What type of computer do we need to have?

Each student is issued an Open High School computer to use (for school purposes only) throughout the school year. The computer will be returned in May to be reimaged, and then reissued in August.

Can students take classes at other schools?

Our Enrollment Policy is that students need to be enrolled in a minimum of FOUR CORE classes (Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies) in order to attend the Open High School of Utah. The majority of our students take all six of their classes with the Open High School. However, if a student wishes to take a course from their school of residence, that is not offered at OHSU, they can check with their neighborhood school to see if they will allow dual enrollment.

In addition to a rigorous academic program, students can also apply to be peer mentors, members of the yearbook staff, and even run for class officer positions. Any student who completes 25 hours of service per semester, will be eligible for the President’s Volunteer Service Award at our End of Year Banquet.

submitted an application by the end of an enrollment period will have an equal chance to be accepted in a random lottery for that period. Once all slots have been filled, any additional lotteries will be to determine priority on the waiting list.
