As parents, we are really excited about OHSU. Rick has been a longtime fan of opensource technology. I am thrilled with what seems to be a rigorous curriculum that uses technology in a forward thinking manner. I have no doubt that this format will be used more and more frequently, and I am excited that Michael is receiving what I perceive as a cutting edge education. The assignments seem reasonable, the teacher feedback is specific and timely (ie. wonderful), and I am thrilled with the types of assignments. There is a tendency to think of a lot of writing as busywork, but I see my son learning to articulate his ideas in a more mature manner. I have also been excited about the online discussions. From my perspective, they give normally very quiet kids a chance to participate, which is something that would not happen in a typical classroom. It is great to give him the option of being home with us, me the option of still supervising and having a hand in his education, and also have the option of making him accountable to someone else. Having the sense of accountability to another authority seems to give the learning purpose and makes it interesting and more challenging for him.
