The Open High School Philosophy

The Open High School of Utah is a public charter school
designed to meet the needs of the 21st century student.  As an online school, we combine state of the art curriculum with strategic one-on-one instruction.  Indeed our methods could be described as "one-on-one tutoring for every student in every subject".

Instruction is individualized allowing students to work at their pace. Our delivery of education is structured to provide maximum flexibility that is student-centered; responsive to the needs of each learner, eliminating the negative aspects of a one size fits all system.  Our technology sets us apart. It is data-driven, providing real time information that instantaneously tracks the student and their performance.  Unique to OHSU is our commitment to share the curriculum we have developed as an open educational resource.

All of these elements combined make the Open High School of Utah the future of education.  We are the face of innovation.

Big Plans for Second Semester
New Faces:
PE-Ms. Joanna Walker comes to Open HS with vast amounts of experiential education knowledge. We look forward to her innovative, cross-curricular lesson plans that will help all of our students embrace a healthy lifestyle! joanna.walker@openhighschool.org

Computer Literacy-Mrs. Ashley Webb
just graduated from BYU and we are fortunate that she chose to join the OHSU Team with her level of expertise in Computer Literacy and glowing recommendations. ashley.webb@openhighschool.org

Tech Support-Mr. David Schultz has joined Open HS as our tech and IT support person. He has been involved in the tech field for over 20 years and enjoys troubleshooting and problem-solving. If you have any computer issues, they will always go through Mrs. Turek first: nicole.turek@openhighschool.org or

 New Classes:
Because of the excellent response we got to our courses and teachers and the level of individualized attention they were able to give our students, we determined it would be in everyone’s best interest to build more classes to offer through OHSU. We are thrilled to have expanded our current choices of English, Math, Geography and Earth Systems to include the following electives:

Fitness for Life (.5)
Computer Literacy (.5)
Current Issues (.5)

Each student should be signed up for a minimum of SIX credits to be on track for graduation. Please take the time to sit down and count up credits. If you are short, contact our Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Wurm, at jenni.wurm@openhighschool.org, and she can quickly enroll your student in additional courses.

New Programs:
One area of focus at OHSU is service learning. In addition to equipping our students with amazing tech skills and a sound education, we aim to instill a love for lifelong service in our students as well. Our Service Learning Plan will be integrated into the curriculum and students will be given opportunities to serve in their communities in addition to providing service as a school. Each student who completes 20 hours of service will help our school qualify to receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Students can do service in conjunction with the school, for church or community activities, and also on their own. Carol Foster, the Parent Org Secretary, will be tracking the hours, so e-mail them to her at CarolPO@openhighschool.org as you do them.

We welcomed a handful of new students at OHSU yesterday at our new student Orientation. It was a successful experience, due in large part to our peer mentors who Skyped in to show the new students the ropes. Our Peer Mentor Program will be expanded next year to include all incoming students. Any returning students who are interested in being a Peer Mentor can contact the Director at delaina.tonks@openhighschool.org for more information.

These two new programs will be wonderful additions to our students’ college applications.

Here’s to Open High School’s Second Semester-may it be even more enjoyable and successful than the first semester!

Don’t hesitate to contact me anytime!
